Memento

"Please, just kill me will you?!"
Crystal-like tears streamed down her already tear-stained face.
"Please, just kill me! Please... Just kill me..."
Her last sentence echoed in a soft whisper around the vacant room.
"Please, Wes, kill me. Just kill me. I can't live like this."
She looked up at the person who betrayed her not once, not twice but many many times with her tear-stained complexion.
"Wes, just KILL me!"
The word "kill" thundered and brought shivers to the building.
"If you won't do it, I will!"
She grabbed the gun from the drawer and aimed it at her temple. One pull at the trigger even by accident would mean fatality. The person became desprate at her gesture and tried to tame her. But no matter what he did, time and luck were not siding with him.
"Bang!"
The trigger went off, sending a nine millimeter bullet straight into her brain. She took one last glance at the person and mouthed, "Goodbye, Wes.". Then her eyesballs rolled backwards, allowing her leftover tears to roll down her fair cheek one last time then she fell onto the floor, lifeless without a single heartbeat. The person stared at her while streams of tears flowed endlessly and whispered soundlessly, "I'm sorry Kate, I'm so sorry." He brushed her blonde hair to the back of her ear genty and covered her eyes, closing it. Once again he whispered into her ear, "Forgive me, Kate." Then, he ran. Feeling his adrenaline pumping through his muscles, he ran, carrying her memories with him, letting the tears flow endlessly down his face. He never meant to hurt her, never did he mean to let her commit suicide or become her reason for suicide.

"Yo, Wesley! Me and my buddies are going out for a drink, you in?"
A sudden voice interrupted my thoughts, I glanced up at Donny, my college friend/roommate and smiled, "Nah, you guys go on without me."
"Aww, don't be such a wussy puss and come hang out with us once in a while. You've been like this since freshman year!"
"Exactly, it's time you gave up on me." I looked at him and said simply, showing no interest.
"Aww, come on Wes, you're my roommate! We've been sharing the same room for three years already! You're going to graduate next summer, you should chill and hang out with us!"
"And get drunk? No thanks, Don. I'm not in the mood." I started to lift my legs and leave but Donny held me back.
"What's your problem, Wes?"
"My problem is, Donny, is something you can't handle."
"Come on, Wes, there's nothing I can't handle, I'm Don the Bomb! I can do anything!"
Since he wanted to know so bad, I just gave it to him at one bash.
"My girlfriend killed herself because I drank."
Don let me go with a shocked look. It wasn't really true but it could pass. It's been three years since that happened. It didn't affect me much anymore but it still hurt.
"You still love her, huh?"
It hurt to not be able to let her go. But everytime remembering her distraught look in her eyes twists my heart. Everytime I renaissance the days with her I feel like crying. It was hard to let her go. She loved me so deeply and I wounded her, causing her to kill herself. I felt bad as a person and even worse as a boyfriend. I didn't deserve her love. I didn't deserve her at all.
"Hey, Wes, it's okay if you don't want to talk about it. But hang out with us sometime, you need to let her go, you don't have to drink." Donny started to leave and I said oh so quietly, "Thanks, Don."
I was left alone with my thoughts.

He ran until there was no energy left in him. He knew that Kate would never be saved. She was as dead as gone. He broke down on the sidewalk and let the tears flow. Soon after that, he took out his phone and dialed 911.
"911, what is the emergency?"
"There's this girl, she... she.. commited suicide."
"Where is the location?"
"32nd, Creek Street. Please hurry."
"Stay calm, sir. We will be there in a moment."
He closed his eyes and dug his face into his palm, trying to drown his pain.
A loud noise circled the area like a thunderstorm. The siren of the ambulance, fire-fighters and police cars ringed into the atmosphere, drowning it with its loud, noisy sound. He walked towards the noise, towards the police and confronted them.
"Excuse me sir, do you know the woman who commited suicide?"
"Yes, her name is Kate Lawson."
"Her parents?"
"They died in a car accident ten years ago."
"Do you know why she did it?"
"No, I'm sorry."
"Thank you for your cooperation."
He nodded and left.
"Excuse me sir. I forgot to take down your name and address."
"Wesley Charleston. I live on the 35th down this street."
"Thank you sir. Can I have a sample of your DNA?"
"Yeah, anything you need."
"We're going to need your finger prints."
"Yeah, whatever."
"Thank you Mr. Charleston, we'll be in touch. Oh, may I have your contact number as well?"
"Yeah sure. 555-2645."
He left the scene solemnly and quietly.

I laid on my bed with my eyes open. What happened three years ago still haunts my dreams. Kate's beautiful smile and contagious laughter still lingers in my heart. I can still feel her next to me. My heart weighs heavy with the burden of regrets. I could never let Kate go.
The door creaked open and a drunk Don entered the room. He fell on the floor before he even got to his bed. I sighed and got up. I dragged him to his bed and carried him onto his bed and sighed again.
"Amanda... Amanda..."
Amanda? Donny was mumbling "Amanda" when I got him to his bed. Who's Amanda?
"Amanda... I'm so sorry... Amanda, don't break up with me... Please Amanda, I love you..."
Donny was mumbling again. I shook my head. He must've hurt this Amanda girl pretty badly to make her break up with him. But not as bad as me. I techinically "killled" my Kate. God, how I wish I could turn back time and make right what I've done wrong.
"Amanda..."
I couldn't take Donny mumbling anymore, I decided to go out for a breather.

"Mr. Charleston, you do recognize this?"
The man sitting at the oppisite of the person known as Charleston showed him a document.
"Yeah, it's Kate's door."
"You do realize we found your DNA on the doorknob?"
"Yeah, I was there when it happened. I tried to stop her but it was too late."
The man nodded and showed him another piece of document.
"Do you recognize this, Mr. Charleston?"
Charleston took a quick glance and gave a quick nod.
"It's the gun she used to kill herself and it has my DNA on it."
The man nodded again and asked, "May I ask why?"
"It was my dad's. When my dad died, he left me his gun as a souvenior of him. When my stepfather came, he told me to dispose of it. I couldn't do so. So I asked Kate to could keep it with her."
The man nodded yet again but he did not speak.
"If you don't mind me asking, didn't Kate commit suicide? Why are you investigationg this?"
The man looked at Charleston in surprise and said, "Precaution, boy. Precaution. We have to know who gave her access to her suicide weapon. Do tell me Mr. Charleston, do you have any idea what may have caused her to kill herself?"
Charleston shook his head and said, "She never told me. That day she asked me to go over to her place, she said she wanted to show me something. When I was there, she was on the floor with the gun at her head then.. then... she... she just pulled the trigger and.. and.."
Charleston could speak no more, tears were flowing aimlessly. Dropping like rain drops on the desk.
"Now, now, don't have to get all emotional and all."
Charleston didn't bother to listen, instead he tried to finish.
"Then 'Bang!' she was a goner. If only I knew what she'd do... I wouldn't have told her to keep the gun for me... I wouldn't have done that... Oh, Kate..."
The man was no longer sitting on his chair. He got up and walked over to Charleston and gave him a light pat on his back. He said, "We never know what would happen. It's not your fault."

*Sigh* I let a long breath out.
I'm sorry, Kate. I really am. I didn't mean to let you find out that way. It was brutal, I know. I wish I could take it back. I didn't know my stepfather and my mother were against us dating. When I took you back to my place, they confronted you. My mom even slapped you. That ass of a stepdad called you a whore. You were so heart-broken. And where was I? I was just an audience, watching you guys fight. I couldn't stop it. I really hate my mom and stepdad now. I even came all the way to Cali to start fresh. But how can I? I still love you Kate.
I talk to myself quite often. But tonight, I seem to be talking more as I gaze into the misty moonlight that lit the midnight sky. Donny was in our room mumbling about some girl named Amanda. And here I am, under this beautiful sky thinking about Kate.
Kate, do you remember? We used to watch the skies like this almost everynight when we had the opportunity.
I smiled. Everytime I think about the good times we had, I smiled and lighten up. I glance at the twinkling stars. It looked like Kate waving to me, smiling. I miss Kate. I really miss her.
